A compressed Air Filter is one of the essential components of Air Compressors. It is composed of fibrous or porous materials that help remove contaminants and moisture from compressed air after compression has taken place and prevent damage to the end product (such as pneumatic machinery, tools, and other systems).

The Main Components Of The Compressed Air Filter

The Compressed Air Filters is composed of the following main components:

  •         Air Inlet: Also known as Air Intake. It is an internal cap that directs the compressed air down into a spiral.
  •         Filter cap: It directs the airflow through the filter.
  •         Airpath: It is an actual path that the compressed air follows for discharging from the filter by entering like a cyclonic.
  •         Filter discharge: It is the outlet through which the compressed air leaves the filter.
  •         Filter element: It is a filter itself, made from fibrous or porous materials, that helps remove contaminant and moisture from compressed air.
  •         Filter bowl: It is the most prominent and largest component of the compressed air filter, which is connected to the cap and is twisted or threaded and locked into place.
  •         Filter quiet zone: It is a place where the water (moisture), oil, and other contaminants, separated for compressed air, are collected and prevented from being re-introduced to it.
  •         Drain: It is a manual-operated, electric-operated, or float-operated drainage system for draining the collected contaminants and debris.

How Does Compressed Air Filters Works?

The unfiltered compressed air may contain moisture, dust, oil, rust, and other contaminants that are dangerous for end-product. Therefore, it requires filtration. The filtration process involves numerous stages that require multiple types of air-line filters depending on pneumatics application.

Typically, the compressed air first passes through a tube-shaped mesh filter, which creates a coalescence effect, causing bigger particles to adsorb on the filter and the water to condense into larger droplets, which then travels to the separation chamber.

Consequently, the compressed air slows down. This allows the particulates to condense on a pad with honeycomb-like qualities, facilitating the movement of droplets to the drain. Most of the oil, large particles, and water droplets are filtered from the compressed gas as the droplets are discharged through the drain valve.

  •         Carbon Filters: They are essential to ensure compressed air oil removal using surface-active adsorption to bond odorants and oil vapours.
  •         Dust Filter: It is used to remove the dust out of the compressed air.
  •         Multi-Purpose Filters: It is a combo of water separator and Coalescing filters. It helps separate multiple contaminants such as moisture, oil, and dust.
  •         Particulate Filter: It is generally used to remove corrosion particles and particles that come through after an adsorption dryer.
  •         Compressed Intake Filters: It helps remove chemical contaminants and particulates as small as 0.3 microns from the compressed air.
  •         High-Efficiency Filters: They are the most energy-efficient air filters for removing particles as small as 0.01 microns and reducing pressure drop.
